You can see the lake from here!

If you’ve walked or driven along the East, North, or West sides of Lake Harriet lately, you may have noticed that the lake is much more visible from the surrounding roads and homes. That’s because the Lake Harriet Environment Council, the Lynnhurst Environment Committee, and the Friends of Roberts Bird Sanctuary have been hard at work removing buckthorn from around the lake.

We are now focusing on the south side near Oliver Ave and moving clockwise (east) — cutting back new growth on stumps that were removed last year and pulling new seedlings. Most of these seedlings are spread by birds after eating the berries from buckthorn trees still growing in the park or on nearby private properties.

Want some fresh air and exercise?

We work year-round (weather permitting) and are currently meeting on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00–3:00 PM. Just bring:

  • Work gloves

  • Garden clippers

  • Water to drink

We’ll provide instructions and any additional tools needed.
